The United States is facing a legal challenge for allowing the sale of Viagra, the first erectile dysfunction drug to be taken by men, the Government said Wednesday.
The US government is seeking to block the drug’s marketing in a bid to deter some men from using the drug and to boost its sales. It will also seek to block the government from taking action on its own to remove the drug from the market.
Viagra is manufactured by Pfizer, which is based in New York. It has been on the market since the 1990s. The drug was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1998.
A study in The New York Times in March revealed that Viagra was only once sold in New York, and that men who used the drug would see a lower price.
The Times article also showed that in 2010 Pfizer purchased 100,000 bottles of the drug. Viagra is the first drug licensed to treat erectile dysfunction.
Viagra has not been linked to any deaths in the US.
The US Food and Drug Administration, the agency responsible for regulating prescription medicines and health care, had been studying the drug for years.
Pfizer was forced to ban Viagra in 2010 after an earlier study showed it caused heart attacks and strokes in more than 10,000 men.
The drug, which is available by prescription only, has not been linked to an deaths. Pfizer said it was considering whether to take a public health action against Pfizer for any wrong it had taken.
In October, the US House of Representatives passed a bill that would require that the drug be prescribed by a doctor.
